The Michigan Difference at Public Health

Campaign: Some say that challenging a University of Michigan (UM) alum is like saying to a kid, “Bet you can’t,” and watching them go straight for it. In the case of the University of Michigan President’s Donor Challenge, Mary Sue Coleman said, “Bet you can,” and they have. In turn, the university has matched $1 for every $2 donated for student support.

Over 600 individuals, companies, or foundations have invested in public health by funding student education through scholarships, internships, or awards for the School of Public Health. 17 new funds have been pledged or started since September 1, 2007, for approximately $3.8 million to help current and future students get the education required to be our next experts in environmental quality, health care management and policy, disease control, genetic information processing, and the list goes on.

“Chitra and I decided to honor one of our dear friends who is fighting a courageous battle,” offered Matthew Boulton, professor of epidemiology and associate dean for practice at the school. “Ron [Davis] has been such an inspiration as the first preventive medicine physician to serve as AMA president, as long-time chair of our UM SPH Preventive Medicine Residency Program, and in the unwavering support and leadership he has provided to public health in myriad ways.” Boulton and his spouse provided the seed funding for the Ronald M. Davis Preventive Residency Scholarship at a time when Davis is dealing with pancreatic cancer.

For UM SPH Dean Kenneth Warner and his wife, Pat, an SPH alumna and current co-chair of the university’s faculty/staff campaign, the reasons for investing in student support stem from their commitment to excellence. “We have received so much from the university over the years. While we ‘give at the office’ every day we also contribute financially to help sustain Michigan’s excellence for generations to come,” says Pat. In addition to her volunteer role in The Michigan Difference Campaign, Pat Warner is currently the associate director of the UM Hospitals and Health Centers, and administrator for the UM CS Mott Children’s and Women’s Hospitals.

Each of the school’s gift funds has a story to go with it, ones that remind us why people are moved to invest in others in such a personal way. While the President’s Donor Challenge offers an incentive, and UM SPH provides the mechanism, giving is more about a person with a passion reaching out to offer an educational oppor-tunity to another person with growing expertise and a life full of promise. In the end, we all benefit.
