Q. When should I arrive to campus?
A. For Faculty: This will depend on your situation. For example, if you are teaching a course during your first term here, you should arrive in enough time to prepare for the course and familiarize yourself with the Department and School of Public Health. If you are not teaching, discuss your arrival time with your faculty mentor and the chair of the department. Please note that regardless of when you arrive, you will need to complete all of your HR paperwork before you will be paid.

Q. I am not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident – who should I talk to?
A. Lori Bowden and the UM International Center. The International Center can be reached by phone at 734-764-9310 or by e-mail at icenter@umich.edu. Their website is http://internationalcenter.umich.edu/.
Q. What happens if I don’t have a social security number?
A. You will need to apply for one. Please see http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10002.html for more information. It is very important that you have a Social Security number before you arrive on campus. You cannot be entered into the University’s HR system or paid until this number has been assigned to you. It is best to start this paperwork as soon as your arrive in the United States (you are eligible to do so 10 days after your arrival).
Q. How do I get a UM ID and a UM ID card?
A. Send your full name, birthdate, social security number, and home address to Lori Bowden.
Q. What is a uniqname and how do I get one?
A. A uniqname (pronounced ‘unique name’) is your computing ID. It’s needed to obtain a computing package, access e-mail, access online information, etc. Your uniqname is public information and is also your UM email address (uniqname@umich.edu).

Q. What is Wolverine Access and what can it do for me?
A. As an employee, you can use Wolverine Access to view all of your employment information such as payroll & benefits, personal information, appointment information, and effort certification. You can access this information at http://wolverineaccess.umich.edu/, by clicking on “employee business” under faculty & staff. Then, login in with your uniqname and Kerberos password.
Q. What is an MCard and how do I get it?
A. The MCard is your University ID Card. You will need to ask Lori Bowden to fill out an ID request form, however, you are unable to get your card until your appointment is on the system. To pick up your ID card, please see http://www.mcard.umich.edu for locations. The closest location is at the CCRB (Central Campus Recreation Building) which is about 5 minutes from SPH.
B. Your MCard will be needed to enter SPH II. There are card slots outside each entrance into the building, where you can swipe your MCard.

Q. How or where do I park?
A. Parking is available to you by purchasing a tag. There are several options available, based on a four-tier system. Please visit http://pts.umich.edu for more information.
B. Bus service is also available throughout campus. You can visit the Parking and Transportation website for University bus routes and schedules. For Ann Arbor public transportation, visit http://www.theride.org.

Q. How do I sign up for benefits?
A. Please see the UM Benefits Office website at http://www.benefits.umich.edu.
Q. What is a PCard and how do I get one?
A. A PCard is a Purchasing Card, or a business credit card. Its primary purpose is to be used for travel expenses. To obtain a Pcard first see Lori Bowden to request permission, then see Tara Kazmaier for the paperwork.
Q. What are my responsibilities as a PCard user?

Q. Is my spouse eligible to receive tuition reimbursement at UM?
A. Your spouse cannot receive tuition reimbursement at UM unless he/she is also employed by UM and meets certain criteria. However, it is possible to apply for the reduced in-state residency tuition rate for your spouse if he/she is otherwise considered to have out-of-state residency. For additional information, please contact the HR Services office at 734-763-2387.
Q. How can I get a key for my office?
A. Please see the front office (M4210) for your key requisition.
B. After you've received your signed key requisition form, you'll take the form to the Key Office. You'll be required to pay a $5 deposit for each key. The key office is located at 525 Church St., about a 10 minute walk from SPH II; see attached map.
C. Key Office hours are:
M, W, Th, F: 7:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. & 12:30 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.
Tuesdays: 7:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. & 1:00 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.
Q. Who do I see to get a computer?

Q. Where is the Department’s computer lab?
A. Room M4048A SPH II.
Q. Where is the Department’s library?
A. Room M4034 (this is also the Department’s conference room)
B. The SPH Library is located on the 2nd floor of SPH II (Room M2030).
Q. What is the Common Room used for?
A. This is a social/common area for everybody in the Department. You can find the departmental mailboxes here as well as a refrigerator, microwave, toaster, coffee, and a sink. Please be sure to clean up after yourself after using this shared facility.
Q. Do I need to pay for the coffee/tea/hot chocolate I get from the Common Room and if so, how do I go about doing this?
A. Yes. You can document the beverages you take from the Common Room on the sign-up sheet posted on the refrigerator. The current price is .50 cents per cup. You will then receive a monthly bill from Dinah Stokes. Please turn in your payment to Kyana Taylor. Another option is to put money in the collection box located on the left side of the refrigerator. If you pay per-cup, you do not need to sign the sheet.
B. Healthy snacks are also available in the common room. For a complete list, see the sign posted on the left side of the refrigerator. Payments for healthy snacks should also be deposited in the hot beverage container located on the left side of the refrigerator.
Q. Where is my mailbox located?
A. The Biostat Common Room. Mailboxes are separated into Student, Faculty, Staff and Post-Doc sections.
Q. What is the Biostatistics Conference Room used for?
A. The conference room is used for meetings, dissertation proposals/defenses, parties, and as a study area.
B. There is a second room, Conference Room Two, located in Room M4117. This is also available to reserve for use.
Q. How do I reserve a Biostatistics Conference Room?
A. Please contact Kyana Taylor. A projector and speaker phone are also available, upon request.
Q. How can I reserve the classrooms on the fourth floor??
A. There are two classrooms that are available to use on the fourth floor- M4318 and M4332. Both rooms are located down the middle hallway. To inquire about reserving these classrooms, please email sph.classroom@umich.edu
Q. Where is the fax machine and how do I use it?
A. The fax machine is located in room M4311 SPH II. As with the UM phone system, dial 9 to fax to a non-UM number. Dial the last 5 digits for a UM number. All International calling procedures can be found on the filing cabinet in the copy room.
Q. How do I use the UM phone system?
A. If you’re calling within the University, dial the last 5 digits of the number. If you’re calling outside the University, press “9” before dialing out.

A. The Crossroad Café is located on the first floor of the Crossroads Building in SPH I. The Café has breakfast, lunch and snack items to purchase (with cash only). Vending machines are also located in this area. Healthy snacks are also available to purchase in the common room.
Q. Where should I park if both the Observatory and the Washington Heights lots are full?
A. Mott’s parking structure on East Medical Center Drive, the structure on Catherine St. or the Life Sciences structure. Additional options can be found on the parking services website at http://pts.umich.edu.

Q. Where is the School’s computer lab?
A. Three computer labs are located in the basement of SPH II. Two of these labs can be reserved for classes. Please see Kyana Taylor if you would like to reserve one of the computer labs. You can also visit the website http://webapps.ccs.itd.umich.edu/criss .

Q. Who do I talk to if I want to hire/fund a student?
A. First talk to the Admissions chair to find out if there are students available to fund (depending on the time of year you need one). See Lori Bowden or Denise Bachoura to find out if you have money to fund a student and for how long.
Q. What is expected of me as a faculty advisor?
A. Please talk to your faculty mentor to discuss the Department’s/School’s expectations.
Q. Where can I find information regarding the Department’s seminars?
A. Online at http://www.sph.umich.edu/biostat/programs/seminars.html. You will also receive fliers and emails from Kyana Taylor. In general, department seminars are held on Thursdays at 3:30 p.m., with a Coffee and Cookies session beginning at 3:00.

A. It is highly recommended that you attend all departmental faculty meetings, seminars, recruitment events, and social events.

Q. Who should I talk to regarding previous course content?
A. You should talk to faculty who have previously taught the course. You can find out who they are from the Chair (Rod Little) or from the student administration staff (Nicole Fenech and Fatma Nedjari). The student administration staff tries to keep copies of all syllabi from every course each term. However, they don’t always have all of them. You can also find syllabi online at https://www.sph.umich.edu/scr/caid/display_current_dept.cfm?DepartmentID=1 .

A. Visit the Registrar's Office webpage at:http://www.umich.edu/~regoff/webgrades.html . Scroll to the bottom of the page where it says Grade Change Resources/Training. The top of the page gives info on the process for Web Grade Entry. For questions contact the Registrar's Office at 764-6280.

A. On Wolverine Access (http://wolverineaccess.umich.edu/), by clicking on “UM course catalog” under the public section. From here, click on “view schedule of classes”. The student administration staff also distributes a paper copy of the Biostat course schedule every term.
Q. Where can I find the academic calendar?
A. Online at http://www.umich.edu/~regoff/calendar. The front office also receives copies of a hanging calendar with UM information on it every fall (the Planning Guide). You can request one of these throughout the year from Kyana Taylor.
