Biostatistics Facts and Figures, 2007-2008:

Department of Biostatistics

2004 Honors and Awards

Faculty, staff, and students in the Department of Biostatistics have received several recent honors and awards. Congratulations to all!

Professor Robert Wolfe:
Professor Robert Wolfe was awarded the Scribner Award for 2004. The Scribner Award is presented annually to one or more individuals who have made outstanding contributions that have a direct impact on the care of patients with renal disorders or have substantially changed the clinical practice of nephrology (more information is available at the following link:   http://www.asn-online.org/awards/scribner.aspx ). Bob, along with two other Scribner Award winners, Frederick Port and Philip Held, continues to be a pioneer and leader in health outcomes and clinical research for kidney disease and transplantation. He has helped to coordinate and launch significant projects including the United States Renal Data Systems (USRDS), the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS), and the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR).

Professor James Lepkowski :
At the annual American Association for Public Opinion Research Innovators Award (AAPOR) conference James Lepkowski was awarded the 2004 Innovators Award, citing his invention of list-assisted telephone sample designs.James Lepkowski, with his collaborators Robert Casady and Clyde Tucker, invented "list-assisted" sample designs as an antidote to the huge cost inefficiencies that were threatening the continued existence of the telephone sampling method (the dominant survey practice of the latter half of the 20 th century). Without this invention it is unclear whether the future viability of telephone survey sampling would have been threatened by cost inflation alone. The widespread use of list-assisted telephone sample designs in all sectors of the survey research profession is testament to the importance of this invention. AAPOR salutes Lepkowski, Casady, and Tucker for their innovation in survey research methods.

Terry Gliedt:
Terry Gliedt was awarded the 2004 Excellence in Staff Service Award . This annual award is made to staff members that excel in their job within the School of Public Health. Terry has been a Senior Programmer Analyst in the Biostatistics Department for the Center for Statistical Genetics and the FUSION group for more than four years. He was recognized for his dependability, patience, and commitment to extraordinary high levels. Colleagues acknowledge his impact on them in many ways, most notably in their increased efficiency.

Student Awards

Each year, the Biostatistics Department awards its students for outstanding achievements. The 2003-04 winners are:

Di An and Weihua Guan for the Best Performance on the Biostatistics Ph.D. Qualifying Exam Award.

Jun Ding for the Outstanding First Year Masters in Biostatistics Award.

Tracy Green for the Outstanding GSI Award.

The following students received travel awards for the papers they submitted to the 2004 Eastern North American Region (ENAR) Conference held in Pittsburgh, PA:

Lei Liu - Shared Frailty Models for Recurrent Events and a Terminal Event.
Paul Hsu - Survival Analysis Using Auxiliary Variables Via Nonparametric Multiple Imputation.
Menggang Yu - Joint Longitudinal-Survival-Cure Models and Their Application to Prostate Cancer.

2004 Graduating Student Gift Campaign: It's Your Choice - Make It

This year's Graduating Student Gift Campaign was a huge success for the Biostatistics Department! With the help of our student champion, Lu Wang, our participation rate was 79.31%, with 23 out of 29 graduates participating.

Graduates made donations to both the Cornell Scholarship Fund and the Biostatistics Gift Fund. The Cornell Scholarship Fund helps future students reach their educational goals through the development of a stronger scholarship program, while the Biostatistics General Gift Fund provides financial backing for student awards and other student support, upgrades to computer labs, and development of our alumni programs. Both funds are extremely important and donations received for each allows the Department to continue growing as it has for years and will for years to come.

Thank you to everybody who helped make this year's campaign a huge success!!
