2. Call for Presentations/Conference Announcements

2002 Annual CCPH Conference - Call for Proposals Now Available!

The Partnership as the Leverage Point for Change
May 4 - 7, 2002 in Miami, Florida ~ Hotel Intercontinental Miami

Community partnerships as a strategy for change in health and higher education have been gaining recognition and momentum in recent years. In the last five years alone, both public and private funding agencies have invested millions of dollars in community partnerships for such goals as increased access to higher education, greater civic engagement, and positive change in individual health behavior, especially among traditionally disadvantaged communities. While these partnerships are achieving many worthy goals, they also pose challenges at the community level:

  • How can we leverage the resources they provide and collaborate across partnerships to maximize the benefits to communities?
  • How can we nurture and sustain partnerships over time?
  • How can we assess and document the role that the partnership itself plays in bringing about change?
  • Many community partnerships do not involve colleges or universities as partners, either explicitly or incidentally. How can we facilitate the linkage between community partnerships and academic institutions for mutual benefit?

CCPH's 6th annual conference will focus on the PARTNERSHIP as the leverage point for change in communities and higher educational institutions.

We expect more than 500 conference participants, including representatives of community agencies, government, foundations, health care delivery organizations, and leaders from educational institutions, i.e. academic administrators, faculty, staff, and students. Among the major themes to be discussed are:

  • Partnership Leadership & Governance
  • Partnership Assessment & Improvement
  • Partnership Principles & Best Practices
  • Partnership Outcomes
  • Partnership Policy & Advocacy
  • Partnership Tools & Resources
  • Partnerships in Service-Learning
  • Partnerships in Community-Based Participatory Research

If you are interested in submitting a proposal for a skill-building workshop, story session, partnership bloopers session, poster or site visit, please access the Call for Proposals by visiting our website or call CCPH's fax-on-demand service at 1-888-267-9183 and select document #202. Proposal Submission deadline is November 1, 2001.

Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine - Academic Career Workshops

Scott Rhodes send this announcement and commentary: One more announcement that may be Pertinent. Although I have heard very mixed reviews of the Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine (ATPM) Annual Meeting in the past, I received an announcement via regular mail about their next meeting, 21-23 march 2002 (in DC.) They have some professional development workshops that look pretty good including: "managing your academic career," "developing and teaching a new course," "writing successful grants," "getting your paper published, "developing distance learning courses and programs," "building community partnerships" (David Blumenthal from Morehouse School of Medicine).
