Accepting Applications - Research Faculty Position
The University of Michigan Department of Epidemiology invites applications for a Research Track Faculty position in the area of social epidemiology. Appointment as a Research Investigator, Assistant Research Scientist, or Research Assistant Professor will be made commensurate with experience. The new faculty member will join an active and productive research team on the social determinants of health and will play a lead role in NIH-funded research projects on neighborhood health effects, stress and cardiovascular disease, social environment by gene interactions, and health disparities generally. The position offers ample opportunities for publication, interdisciplinary collaboration, grant writing, interactions with students and postdoctoral fellows, and career development. Candidates should hold a PhD in epidemiology or related field and have experience with complex health databases. Experience in multilevel and longitudinal data analysis methods, neighborhood health effects, and/or analyses of gene-by-environment interactions is a plus. The position is based at the Center for Social Epidemiology and Population Health (CSEPH) within the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. CSEPH offers ample opportunities for interdisciplinary research, mentoring of students, and development of new research projects. To apply, please provide a statement of current and future research plans, teaching philosophy and experience, and curriculum vitae to: Ana V. Diez Roux, Director, Center for Social Epidemiology and Population Health, Rm 2679 Department of Epidemiology, 1415 Washington Heights, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-2029 or electronically to lhopkins@umich.edu. Review of applications will begin April 15, 2012 and continue until a suitable candidate is identified. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply and the University is supportive of the needs of dual career couples. The University of Michigan is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
Dr. ana Diez Roux, Director Receives Revision Supplement
The National Institute of Health/ NCMHD has awarded the Ana Diez Roux a Revision supplement to the Michigan Center for Integrative Approaches to Health Disparities (PI Ana Diez Roux), P60 MD001249.
The CIAHD Revision supplement creates an Environmental Assessment Core (EAC) that will construct and investigate the effects of a range of neighborhood-level measures hypothesized to be relevant to cardiovascular disease and health disparities in cardiovascular disease. The EAC will provide the infrastructure and datasets necessary for CIAHD investigators to pursue environmental health disparities research that is highly synergistic with and expands the scope of the currently funded projects. The new measures and datasets that we propose to create will allow the interdisciplinary CIAHD team funded under the parent grant (which includes expertise in epidemiology, psychology, sociology, spatial analysis, and genetics) to pursue research on the environmental contributors to disparities in cardiovascular risk. The EAC also extends our partnership to include expertise in environmental assessment, epidemiology, and economics from Drexel University. Most importantly, by generating these measures and providing the methods necessary to extend these measure to other datasets , the EAC will also facilitate future expansions and continuity of the work initiated under CIAHD through other funding mechanisms maximizing the sustainability of this work beyond the funding period.

Dr. Amy Schulz Receives Competitive Supplement
The National Institute of Health/ NCMHD has awarded Amy Schulz a competitive supplement to the Michigan Center for Integrative Approaches to Health Disparities (PI Ana Diez Roux), P60 MD001249.
The Competitive Revision is highly synegistic with ongoing work at our Center which focuses on understanding health disparities in cardiovascular risk. The Supplement will extend our work to conduct comparative effectiveness research of special relevance to the reduction of disparaties in cardiovascular risk. Specifically the Supplement will compare the effectiveness of three strategies to maintain physical activity following a baseline intervention to increase physical activity among recipients of low-to moderate income, predominantly African American and Latino communities at high risk for obesity, hypertension, diabetes and heart disease.

Dr. Ana Diez Roux elected to the Institute of Medicine
Two University of Michigan faculty members have been elected to the Institute of Medicine, one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine.
Ana Diez Roux, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., professor of epidemiology, director of the Center for Integrative Approaches to Health Disparities, and associate director of the Center for Social Epidemiology and Population Health at the U-M School of Public Health
The IOM recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. Chinnaiyan and Diez Roux are among 65 new members. Altogether, the IOM has 1,778 members.
Diez Roux is an epidemiologist whose work has focused on the examination of the social determinants of health, and she has been an international leader in the social epidemiology of cardiovascular disease, the application of multilevel analysis in epidemiology, and the investigation of neighborhood health effects.
"It is a great pleasure to welcome these distinguished and accomplished individuals to the Institute of Medicine," said IOM President Harvey V. Fineberg. "Each of these new members stands out as a professional whose research, knowledge, and skills have significantly advanced health and medicine and who has served as a model for others. The Institute of Medicine is greatly enriched by the addition of our newly elected colleagues."

ciahd summer training program with jackson heart study
Faculty and Graduate students from the Jackson Heart Study affiliates—Jackson State University and the University of Mississippi Medical Center—will be participating in a summer research training program with CIAHD. The summer training program is designed to promote research and training as well as encourage inter-university collaboration. Attendees will participate in advanced research methods courses taught by instructors on the University of Michigan campus. The CIAHD program will provide tuition, housing, and travel expenses for accepted applicants.
Referrals from JHS will be accepted in April - May each year
