Adjusting the Size of Your Netscape Disk Cache
If you are using Netscape for UNIX, you may find that you are running
out of disk space in your AFS home directory.
If so, your
Netscape disk cache may be larger than you would like it to be. Netscape
defaults to a disk cache of 5000 kilobytes (KB). For users with
a 15000 KB limit on the size of their AFS home directory, this
may be more space that they would like Netscape to be using.
To change the size of your disk cache for Netscape version 4
(for Version 3, see the next section),
- Start Netscape.
- Click on the Edit menu and select Preferences.
- Click on the arrow to the left of the Advanced category
on the left side of the Preferences window.
- Click on the Cache item under the Advanced category.
- Click on the button labeled Clear Disk Cache
and select OK when it asks if
you really want to do it. This will erase any files currently in the
cache.
- Change the size of the disk cache.
The cache may currently be set to the default of 5000 KB.
You should decrease that number.
To do this, click in the box holding the number
to the right of the label
that reads Disk Cache:.
Clear the number from the box by
typing Control-u or backspacing over
the numbers.
Enter in the new number for the size of cache you want.
It can be as low as 0. 1000 should be a reasonable value.
Decreasing this number will lower performance slightly (mostly
when you use the Back button)
but will
free up disk space in your home directory.
Click OK and you're done.
To change the size of your disk cache for Netscape version 3,
do the following:
- Start Netscape.
- Pull down the menu under Options
and select Network Preferences.
- The Cache tab on the upper far left of the window
that pops up should already be selected.
If not, click on the Cache tab.
- Click on the button labeled Clear Disk Cache Now
and select OK when it asks if
you really want to do it. This will erase any files currently in the
cache.
