Distance EducationDistance learning - the use of technology to simulate a classroom experience for an off-site location - is an important component in some SPH programs and is used exclusively in others. The Executive Education and OJ/OC programs allow students to complete a M.P.H. or M.H.S.A. in using a combination of on-campus and distance-learning class experience. Some of the opportunities for continuing education are offered in a distance-learning format. The Certificate in the Foundations of Public Health is an interdepartmental program offered exclusively through distance learning. It offers coursework in each of the five major disciplines of public health for students wishing to earn graduate credit in public health. Certificate coursework may be transferable to a degree program within UM SPH or to other schools or programs of public health. Applications to the Certificate in the Foundations of Public Health are available online. Distance-leaning students interact with UM SPH instructors via the Internet through web conferencing and meeting systems. Regardless of their geographic location, students meet, talk, and see their professors and classmates. Some courses also utilize podcasts, video, narrated Powerpoint, and C-Tools – the course management system of the University of Michigan, powered by Sakai. Instructional TechnologiesFeatured here are instructional technologies that specifically address issues relating to courses delivered partially or entirely online, for faculty and student who rarely or never meet in a traditional classroom.
