Installing VirusScan onto Windows Computers

Upgrade McAfee Anti-Virus Software

Please download the appropriate new version of McAfee Anti-virus software from the following site (version 4.51 for windows 9x PCs and version 8.0 for windows NT/2000/XP/2003): http://virusbusters.itcs.umich.edu/vsdl.html These are also available on the SPH network at R:\VirusScan\vs451um.exe for version 4.51 for windows 9.x PCs and vs80um.exe for version 8.0 for windows NT/2000/XP/2003.

Uninstall the version of McAfee on your PC:

  1. Click on 'Start'.
  2. Click on 'Settings'.
  3. Double click on 'control panel'.
  4. Double click on 'add/remove programs'.
  5. Scroll down until you see 'McAfee'.
  6. Click once to highlight ‘McAfee’.
  7. Click on the 'remove' button.
  8. Follow any prompts.
  9. Reboot the PC.

Install the latest McAfee software on your PC:

  1. Double click on the new antivirus file you downloaded or copied.
  2. Follow the prompts.
  3. Reboot the PC.

Update the McAfee Software:

  1. Right click on the McAfee icon (it is a blue outlined shield with a red V) in your system tray in the lower right hand corner of you PC screen.
  2. Click on ‘Update Now..’
  3. Once you see ‘Update Finished’ in the window, click on ‘Close’.
  4. Reboot the PC.

Scan your PC:

  1. Right click on the McAfee icon (it is a blue outlined shield with a red V) in your system tray in the lower right hand corner of you PC screen.
  2. Click on ‘VirusScan Console’.
  3. Double click on ‘Disinfect My Computer’.
  4. Click on the ‘Actions’ tab.
  5. Change the selection so ‘When a Virus is Found’ is set to ‘Delete infected files’. Click on ‘Yes’. If it is already set to delete, go on to step 8 below.
  6. Click on ‘OK’.
  7. Double click on ‘Disinfect My Computer’.
  8. Be sure that under ‘Scan options’ both ‘Include subfolders’ and ‘Scan boot sectors’ are checked.
  9. Click on ‘Scan now’.
  10. Should the PC find any viruses, write down the file name and path (e.g. c:\winnt\sys32\dllhost.exe). While unlikely, if the files are critical to your operating system, writing down the file name and path will make it easier to restore them.
