The Emergence of Doulas as Paraprofessionals in the United States
This project is investigating the emergence of doulas (women who assist other women in non-medical aspects of labor and delivery) as childbirth paraprofessionals. The project includes a mailed survey of a random sample of practicing doulas who have been certified through four different training programs, and case studies of how doulas are practicing and interacting with health care institutions and providers in five different cities.
