Promoting Healthy Eating in Detroit (PHED) (Kieffer, PI)
This collaborative project, with funding for a one-year pilot study from the Michigan Department of Community Health and a three year intervention from the CDC starting in 2002, will link several URC-affiliated projects, including REACH and the Eastside Village Health Worker Partnership and programs within the Detroit Health Department. The project will increase availability of healthy foods; build community market demand for health foods; and strengthen local and state organizational and policy links needed to further extend and sustain health food demand and resources. Intervention activities will include expanding neighborhood mini-markets; increasing the number of stores and restaurants with healthy foods; developing new mini-markets; conducting healthy foods demonstrations; establishing healthy eating support groups; and providing educational opportunities at community sites.
