Financial Aid
The University of Michigan's Office
of Financial Aid (OFA) is the main source of funds for financing graduate
education for qualified students. The School of Public Health's Office
of Academic Affairs (734-764-5425) can direct you to someone who can answer
your questions, or make phone calls on your behalf to address concerns
with the Office of Financial Aid or Student Accounts. If your program falls under the Rackham Graduate School, you
can also visit the Rackham Graduate School website
for funding opportunities.
Financial aid is granted on the basis of need and scholarship. Several
options are available to graduate students admitted to the Department
of Environmental Health Sciences. In addition to tuition assistance offered
through the School of Public Health and the University of Michigan, the
Department of Environmental Health Sciences maintains several training
grants that can provide tuition assistance and/or a stipend. In addition,
there is a variety of assistance from outside sources.
Students should begin in October to investigate financial aid possibilities
for the following academic year. Many financial aid programs have application
deadlines in January and February. Applicants are encouraged to submit
their completed application for admission to the department by February
1. Students who wish to apply for guaranteed bank loans or other types
of education loans should contact the University's Office
of Financial Aid.
Types of Assistance
- Work-study grants are available for students with demonstrated
financial need.
- A limited number of teaching assistantships are available in
the department. Many of our students have obtained assistantships through
other departments (i.e. Chemistry, Biology). You will need to contact
the department directly.
- Research assistantships provide support for advanced (typically
doctoral level) graduate students.
- Training Grants
- Education
and Research Center (ERC) Traineeships: The Center for
Occupational Health and Safety Engineering has been supported
by The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)
as an Education and Research Center (ERC) for nearly 20 years.
NIOSH provides funding to support center activities, including
financial aid for U.S. or Permanent Residents in Industrial Hygiene
and Hazardous Substances. These are competitive awards and admission
to the program does not guarantee support.
- Environmental Toxicology and Epidemiology Training
Grant: The training program promotes the study of causes
and prevention of adverse consequences to human health that may
result from environmental exposures. The program is sponsored
by the National Institute of Health, NIH. Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships
are available. Predoctoral Fellowships provide tuition, stipend and health insurance.
- Fogarty Training
Grant: This program represents an integrated effort to further
develop the occupational and environmental health (OEH) infrastructure
in Southern Africa with a particular emphasis on improving research
training and capacities. Funding is provided by the Fogarty International
Center (FIC) of the United States National Institutes of Health
with co-sponsorship by the National Institute for Occupational Safety
and Health and the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences.
- Scholarships: In addition to the sources of financial aid
listed above, Students can apply for numerous scholarships sponsored
by foundations, governmental agencies, and private organizations. As
examples, our students have been awarded scholarships from:
- Air & Waste Management Association
- American Industrial Hygiene Foundation
- American Society of Heating Ventilation and Refrigeration Engineers
- Michigan National Safety Council
- US Department of Energy
- US Environmental Protection Agency (STAR graduate fellowships)
