The Executive Master's Program

The Environmental Health Sciences master's degree program for working professionals

What Is the Executive Master's Program in Environmental Health Sciences?

The Executive Master’s Program in Environmental Health Sciences offers a unique combination of on-campus and distance learning to provide the flexibility that busy mid-career professionals require. This non-residential part-time academic program allows environmental health practitioners, industrial hygienists, safety professionals, and occupational physicians to continue their careers while pursuing advanced study. The Department of Environmental Health Sciences in the School of Public Health has offered an Executive Masters since 1981.

The Executive Master’s Program provides a fully accredited Master of Public Health (MPH) degree that meets the same curriculum objectives and competencies as our full-time residential program, but in a format designed for busy mid-career individuals.

Who Participates in the Program?

The Executive Master’s Program accepts a cohort of 30 to 35 students every two years. These students are drawn from across the country and Canada and are typically mid-career individuals working in industry, government, and consulting. Becaus/e participants in the program are currently working or active in the profession, the age range and level of experience in a typical OJ/OC class exceed those found in typical on-campus (residential) classes.

This MPH degree program meets the didactic component (not the practicum requirement) for board eligibility as established by American Board of Preventive Medicine.

The next cohort will begin coursework in the Fall of 2008. Review of applications starts in January 2008 and will continue until the class is filled.

What Is the Program Format?

The combined On-Job/On-Campus format of the Executive Master’s Program, unique to the University of Michigan, allows you to continue your professional employment while acquiring the information and skills you need to assume a leadership position in your profession. It provides you with access to the superlative resources at the University of Michigan, promotes collegial interactions with departmental faculty, and develops professional and rewarding relationships with your fellow students.

The on-campus component of this 20-month program consists of 11 weekend class sessions in Ann Arbor held every other month. These intensive 3½ day sessions, which run from 8:30 am on Thursday morning through 2:00 pm on Sunday afternoon, include formal classroom work, seminars, exercises and projects. Between on-campus sessions, participants learn through customized distance education technologies including synchronous discussions (on-line live audio/video with your professors and classmates) and asynchronous instruction (off-line at your own pace) such as streaming video and interactive case studies.

We will utilize the classrooms, conferencing facilities, lounges and other facilities in our brand new building called ‘Community Crossroads’.

Ann Arbor is 25 miles from the Detroit Metropolitan Airport, a Northwest hub that has excellent connections throughout the country.

E-Learning

Students in the Executive Master's Program stay continuously connected and engaged with the program through state-of-the-art e-learning technology.

At twice-weekly sessions students interact with instructors via the internet through a web conferencing system. The system allows synchronous voice and video communication and sharing of instructional material. Regardless of their geographic location, students meet, talk, and see their professors and classmates, recreating a live classroom experience.

In addition, some materials such as streaming video of lectures and interactive case studies are in an asynchronous web format. Students can access these modules from anywhere at any time. The audio portion of these modules are also available as podcasts.
