The industrial hygiene program is committed to an outstanding educational experience that motivates students toward academic excellence and provides students with a comprehensive professionally oriented curriculum that imparts the knowledge, skills and preparation to:
1. Understand the essential scientific and practical elements of the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, management, control and communication of health hazards in the workplace.
2. Apply and communicate knowledge of hazards to promote healthy working conditions.
3. Think critically in defining and solving problems.
4. Work effectively in teams with other health professionals
5. Embrace the professional and ethical responsiblities inherent to the practice of industrial hygiene.
In addition to the regularly scheduled masters programs, the Executive Education On Job/On Campus (OJ/OC) program in Industrial Hygiene is available for persons unable to reside on campus full-time. Students in these programs attend campus every other month for four day sessions that extend from Thursday morning through Sunday afternoon for two years. New OJ/OC programs begin in the Fall of every even year.
Additional skills can be obtained in the Hazardous Substance Academic Training Program (HSAT), which provides specialized training in the management of hazardous substances for professionals in Industrial Hygiene (IH) and Environmental Health (EH). The program provides training in this multidisciplinary field, drawing on specialized coursework and experience in public health, environmental science, and engineering.
The MS degree is geared for students seeking research careers and serves as a doctoral preparatory program, in effect, while also providing sufficient coursework in core IH topics to qualify graduates for professional practice should they not continue on to the PhD program.
The PhD program follows conventional norms in terms of essential coursework, proficiency examinations, proposal writing/presentation, research and professional development, and defense of the written dissertation.
