The greatest achievements of the Michigan IH program continue to be the successes of its students and graduates. Many of our graduates have been recognized and honored for their contributions to the profession. To help recognize the achievements of our students while still enrolled, there are a number of scholarships and other awards that have been established. These are listed below along with a brief description. Awardees are listed on subsequent pages.

The Warren A. Cook Award is typically awarded each year to a doctoral student, typically nearing the end of his/her dissertation research. It recognizes outstanding contributions to research in IH, and is named after the first IH faculty member, Dr. Warren Cook. It provides a modest monetary award and inclusion on a commemorative plaque. (Awardees)

The Robin Theeuwes Memorial Award is a very special award because the recipient is selected by the current class of students. It was established shortly after the untimely death of Robin Theeuwes from cancer between her first and second years of study. It is given each year to a second-year IH student. Selection for this award means that the student has earned the highest respect and is recognized for great strength of character. Names of the awardees are maintained on a commemorative plaque. (Awardees)

The Michigan Industrial Hygiene Society Award is given each year to an outstanding second-year IH student, selected by the faculty on the bases on academic performance, leadership potential, and promise for a successful career in IH. A plaque and gift are provided by MIHS for students selected each year from Michigan and other regional universities with IH programs. The names of the UM awardees are also placed on a commemorative plaque maintained outside of the IH Program offices. (Awardees)

The AIHF Ralph G. Smith Scholarship is typically awarded to an outstanding first-year IH student that is expected to do very well in IH studies and in their professional careers. The award is named in memory of Dr. Ralph Smith, a highly distinguished leader in IH and former member of the program faculty. Each year, a stipend of $6,000 is provided by the American Industrial Hygiene Foundation from an endowed fund that was established from donations made by friends and former students of Dr. Smith. Names are maintained on a commemorative plaque. (Awardees)

The AIHF Clayton Endowed Scholarship is one of several endowed scholarships awarded by the American Industrial Hygiene Foundation. It is named for George and Florence Clayton, two names that are not only synonymous with the industrial hygiene profession but also instrumental in shaping AIHA. They are among the early pioneers of the profession and have made it their lifelong work to ensure recognition of industrial hygiene as a career. Their lives are intimately entwined with AIHA because they have been major players in the association's history. The Claytons used part of their residence as the association's early headquarters in 1955. Since the early days of AIHA, George and Florence have been laying the groundwork for the continuation of industrial hygiene.

George and Florence Clayton, employees of Clayton Environmental Consultants Inc., and other individual donors have been very generous in creating this scholarship opportunity and have asked that it be made available to a deserving student and rotate among three schools: the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the University of Michigan, and Wayne State University. (Awardees)

AIHF TSI, Inc. & Arthur J. Abrams Scholarship is to be awarded to a student at an ABET-accredited college or university in Minnesota or a northeastern state for applied research in industrial hygiene. This would require that the scholarship be awarded later in the academic career so the research could be evaluated. Career changers are an important target group for the TSI, Incorporated & Arthur J. Abrams Scholarship. Abrams' daughter Judith made this type of change in her 30s and found great satisfaction in her new career. It is because of Art's love and support for his daughter as she made this difficult decision, as well as his own career change (made in his mid-40s) that brought him into our industry, that an emphasis on changing careers is a part of this scholarship's criteria. (Awardees)

3M Scholarship Awards are awarded, typically three each year, by the 3M corporation and represent a national competition between IH student from throughout the country. Michigan students have been honored as recipients many times over the years. This award carries a $3, 000 stipend. (Awardees)

Semiconductor Safety Association Scholarship Awards are competitively awarded by the SSA each year on the basis of merit among students around the world who submit proposals for focused research projects on topics relevant to semiconductor health and safety. Awardees are given funding for their research and for travel to the annual SSA technical conference, which affords excellent opportunities for networking and securing internships/employment. (Awardees)

Union Carbide Kenan Award is award is given for outstanding graduate students working in the field of measurement science. (Awardees)
