Students
The Industrial Hygiene Program at Michigan has been fortunate to be able to consistently attract cohorts of students from around the world who are bright, talented, motivated, and diverse in background and interests. A common thread is a concern for, and commitment to, the health and well-being of workers, the general population, and the environment; as well as an interest in the science underlying the recognition, characterization, control, and prevention of adverse health effects in affected populations.
The combination of residential and On-Job/On-Campus graduates from our program now totals over 700 individuals, more than any other IH program in the country, most of whom are still practicing in the field. Our alumni comprise a network of professionals dedicated to occupational health that spans the globe, but that has a common root at the University of Michigan.
Our ability to attract and retain high-quality students can be attributed to a number of factors. These include the breadth, quality, and rigor of the curricula offered; the dedication of the faculty; the interconnection to other departments within the School of Public Health, the University, and many external organizations; and to the shared experiences among the students.
Students are admitted to the IH program after careful evaluation of their academic and professional experience, and an assessment of their promise for a successful career in occupational and environmental health. We feel that it is important to maintain high admission standards, but admission criteria are not restricted to grade point averages and GRE scores; relevant experience can weigh heavily in admission decisions. We encourage all interested students to apply.
Residential and non-residential (i.e., On-Job/On-Campus) students can take advantage of the tremendous resources within the department, the School of Public Health, and the University to enrich their academic and personal experiences while enrolled. The University of Michigan Industrial Hygiene Students Association (UMIHSA) was the first graduate student group chartered by the American IH Association (AIHA). It is an outstanding organization that engages students (members and non-members) in a number of activities that serve to further enrich the graduate experience. UMIHSA was recognized as the top student organization by the AIHA in 2000.
We hope you will consider availing yourself of the rich tradition, unique benefits, and personal growth experiences accompanying graduate education in Industrial Hygiene at the University of Michigan.
