A Special Message from the Chair

Dear Prospective Applicants to our Masters and Doctoral Programs,
Greetings, applicants! This is an especially exciting time to for me to welcome you as a prospective student of our Programs. We have just moved into the beautiful new facilities—including new classrooms, laboratories, and offices—of the Crossroads Public Health School building. Our world-class faculty has secured new grants and projects –even during this time of constrained federal funding—to address critical problems in environmental health that will help support your education and give you countless opportunities to learn how to be an environmental health professional. Our recent graduates won 6 of the 12 ASPH/EPA Fellowships awarded in the 2006 national competition by the Association of Schools of Public Health and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency – just one recent indication of the caliber of the students and education in our programs. And having arrived this past summer as the new Department Chair, I bring our Department 16 years of research, teaching, and administrative experience as a tenured Professor at the Harvard School of Public Health with the goal of taking what is already a vibrant, strong Department, situated in one of the best Universities in the country, into the forefront of science and education on every level.
What a fantastic time to be here!
I invite you to peruse this website and our programs and contact myself or any of our faculty with your questions. You will not be disappointed. And just in case you need to see the “big picture” as to why this should be your top destination, please see my own Top Reasons for Studying Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Michigan School of Public Health.
This year (2008-2009), special scholarship/stipend packages will be
offered to top qualified applicants (PhD, MS, MPH) on an accelerated timetable. Applicants are strongly
encouraged to submit completed applications by January 1st, 2008. In
addition, PhD applicants are encouraged to review our website and communicate directly with individual faculty
members who may be doing research of particular interest."
Best wishes!!!!
Howard Hu, M.D., M.P.H., Sc.D.
