The following are institutions or units outside of the Environmental Health Sciences Department that are important strategic partners in terms of research and training, each of which involves at least two or more EHS faculty members.


NSF International

NSF InternationalFounded in 1944, NSF International is committed to protecting public health and safety worldwide. NSF is a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Food and Water Safety and Indoor Environment. Additional services include safety audits for the food and water industries, management systems registrations delivered through NSF International Strategic Registrations, organic certification provided by Quality Assurance International and education through the NSF Center for Public Health Education.

Global Health Programs and Initiatives

The Global Health Certificate and the MPH program in International Health (Department of Epidemiology) take complementary approaches to the study of relationships between developing and industrialized countries.

Nutrition Obesity Research Center/Michigan Metabolomics and Obesity Center

Global Health Programs and InitiativesThe goal of the Nutrition Obesity Research Center (NORC) is to support infrastructure to encourage and enable researchers from preclinical, clinical and translational and population-based disciplines to integrate the newest tools in molecular and cellular biology, neurobehavior and computational biology into their studies related to metabolic health. The NORC is the only new center funded by the NIH in the latest round of funding and grew out of the Michigan Metabolomics and Obesity Center. The latter was created in 2006 to provide Core support for obesity research and to accelerate the development of the metabolomics as 'omics' technology for the Medical School.

PROTECT Superfund Program

The Puerto Rico Testsite for Exploring Contamination Threats (PROTECT) Program studies exposure to environmental contamination in Puerto Rico and its contribution to preterm birth. PROTECT is a multi-project, multi-institution collaboration that involves four primary institutions: Northeastern University, University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus, University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez and University of Michigan.

University of Michigan Center for Global Health LogoThe Center for Human Growth and Development (CHGD) is internationally known for its leadership in integrating biological, behavioral, and cultural aspects of development. Driven by its focus on multidisciplinary collaborations among biomedical, behavioral, and social scientists, the long-range goal of research and training at the Center is to optimize children's physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional development.

University of Michigan Risk Science Center

U-M Risk Science CenterPromotes informed decision-making by conducting research into pressing health questions and effectively communicating the results to the public. It works toward improving all parts of the risk-evaluation process by identifying, isolating, and quantifying various risks to provide understanding of their likelihood and consequences.
