Mercury Deposition and Atmospheric Concentrations in New England

What is this project about?

The overall purpose of this project is to establish an ambient monitoring network within New England to characterize spatial and temporal patterns of mercury deposition and atmospheric mercury concentrations. The data to be collected/analyzed includes vapor phase, particulate and precipitation mercury and trace metals. Measurements associated with the project began on July 1, 1997, with gaseous and particulate samples being collected over a one-year time period and atmospheric deposition samples being collected over a two year period. Following the completion of the study, a summary of final study results will be presented in a project Final Report. It is hoped that the data gathered during this study can be used to provide indications of the relative impacts of local versus regional mercury emission sources on the New England region.

The University of Michigan Air Quality Laboratory is one of several groups participating in this project. For its part, the UMAQL will be responsible for the collection and analysis of data from four sites within the measurement domain.

Project Management

Overall Coordination

The overall project management will be coordinated through the Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management (NESCAUM) and the U.S. EPA Region 1 (New England). NESCAUM is an association of the air pollution control divisions of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. Praveen Amar (NESCAUM) and Lee Alter (NESCAUM) serve as the Project Supervisor and Project Manager, respectively.

Field Officers

A group of field officers will be responsible for providing training, documentation and guidance to participating field operators. The field officers for this project are:

Tim Scherbatskoy (University of Vermont), Lead Field Officer
John Cucco (RI DOH)
Tom McGrath (MA DEP)
Jeff Emery (ME DEP)
