UMAQL Research Programs

Ohio Mercury Monitoring and Receptor Modeling Study
As part of a cooperative agreement with the USEPA, this study established an enhanced field monitoring site in eastern Ohio for investigating the impact of coal combustion on the chemistry, transport and deposition of mercury.
Tri-City CAPS
Investigating the potential health effects of ambient air pollutants.
Air-water Exchange Over Lakes and Ocean Surfaces (AEOLOS)
Investigating chemical exchange processes at the air-water interface.
The Atmospheric Deposition Study of PCBs, Mercury and Cadmium
Investigating the relative contribution of atmospheric deposition to the loading of PCBs, mercury and cadmium in the City of Detroit's waste water.
Dry Deposition of Mercury to Natural Waters
Developing the analytical and measurement techniques necessary to estimate the atmospheric loading of mercury to sensitive, aquatic ecosystems.
Clean Air
A collaborative research study between the University of Michigan Medical School and the UMAQL investigating the cardiac health effects of ambient particulate air pollution.
South Florida Atmospheric Mercury Monitoring Study (SoFAMMS)
Investigating the relative contribution of anthropogenic mercury emissions in Southeast Florida to the mercury burden in the Florida Everglades.
The Great Lakes Atmospheric Mercury Assessment Project (GLAMAP)
The University of Michigan Air Quality Laboratory (UMAQL) performed a two-year study of atmospheric mercury levels in the Great Lakes region.
Lake Superior Basin Project
This research program takes a holistic approach to understanding the sources and cycling of mercury in the Lake Superior Basin.
Mercury Deposition in New England
The University of Michigan Air Quality Laboratory (UMAQL) is participating in a regional monitoring study aimed at developing a better understanding of the spatial and temporal patterns of mercury across the Northeastern United States.
CARE
The Collaborative Air Research Effort is a joint interdisciplinary program between the Michigan State Universtiy and the University of Michigan investigating the health effects of air pollutants.
Michigan Mercury Network
The University of Michigan Air Quality Laboratory (UMAQL) is partnering with the Michigan DEQ Air Quality Division in a project aimed at developing a better understanding of the spatial and temporal patterns of the levels of speciated mercury across the state. Focus on this project is urban impacts on downwind deposition and Hg chemistry.

Modeling the Atmospheric Transport and Photochemistry of Mercury
A 3-d Eulerian model for transport and photochemistry of mercury has been developed which includes fully integrated gas-phase, aqueous and aerosol chemistry. Study includes detailed comparisons between model results and measurements from past field campaigns in S. Florida and Midwest.

Hybrid Receptor Model Development
The University of Michigan Air Quality Laboratory (UMAQL) is developing new monitoring tools and analytical methods to improve data inputs for state-of-the-art receptor modeling approaches. These high-resolution data will improve receptor modeling solutions and better define uncertainties in the spatial contribution fields.
