Certification of Academic Competencies in Epidemiology

Marcus Samo
"This program is academically and intellectually stimulating and challenging. It's an excellent opportunity for the busy health professionals to brush up on epidemiologic skills and anyalysis on health issues of particular interest. I highly recommend it to anyone."
- Marcus Samo (Federated States of Micronesia)

The Graduate Summer Session in Epidemiology is providing an opportunity for receiving certification of academic competencies in epidemiology after completion of a 12 credit-hour curriculum. The objective is to document satisfactory completion of a curriculum that encompasses demonstration of proficiency in six areas: 1) Basic Epidemiology, 2) Basic Biostatistics, 3) Intermediate and Advanced Methods and Biostatistics, 4) Data Management, 5) Public Health Practice and Applied Research, 6) Disease- and Exposure- Specific Epidemiology. A curriculum of 10 required course credit hours and an additional 2 credit hours of elective courses may be completed over a period of two summer sessions.

Specific Issues Concerning Enrollment for Certification of Academic Competencies in Epidemiology

  • Program is not retroactive and will commence with the 37th annual program of the Graduate Summer Session (GSS) in Epidemiology in July, 2002.
  • Applicant will not be required to declare their intention to seek certification in their initial year of registration in the GSS Epidemiology program. However, it should be emphasized that to receive course credit, the student must receive a grade of B or better, and that we would advise planning to fulfill curriculum requirements as soon as possible.
  • A curriculum of 10 required course credit hours and an additional 2 credit hours of elective courses may be completed over a period of two summer sessions. The courses listed in each area will change from year to year, depending on instructor availability and student demand. This may not be feasible, however, and a student may seek to complete course requirements for certification over a more prolonged period that would accommodate individual scheduling constraints.
  • The menu of required and elective courses was designed to facilitate a career path in an academic or private industrial setting or employment in a public health agency at the local, state or federal level.
  • After successfully completing the curriculum, the applicant would receive a certificate signed by the Faculty Director of the Graduate Summer Session in Epidemiology and the Chair of the University of Michigan Department of Epidemiology.
