Funding your Graduate Education

Dean’s Award Scholarships (for M.P.H. students)

The Department has limited scholarship funds for incoming domestic M.P.H. students. All applicants that are U.S. citizens or permanent residents are automatically considered for scholarships. There are full tuition, half tuition and partial tuition scholarships available. It is recommended that you submit your application early in the admissions season for funding consideration.

Rackham Fellowships and Grants (for Ph.D. students)

The Rackham School of Graduate Studies offers numerous scholarships, grants and fellowships to Ph.D. students. Please visit the Rackham Financial Assistance page for more information.

Interdisciplinary Program in Infectious Diseases (IPID) training program (for Ph.D.Students)

The Interdisciplinary Program in Infectious Diseases (IPID) program, funded by the National Institutes of Health, provides tuition and stipend to 4 pre-doctoral students for interdisciplinary training in infectious disease. IPID has several unique features designed to enhance interdisciplinary training: dual mentorship is required, where one mentor has laboratory expertise and the other expertise in epidemiology, population studies or mathematical modeling; all students receive training in laboratory and epidemiologic methods and mathematical modeling, and have practical experience in the laboratory and either epidemiologic studies or mathematical modeling. All students complete a set of core courses, and gain practical expertise in the laboratory, in data collection, in data analysis, and in modeling. For more information and for the online application go to http://www.sitemaker.umich.edu/macepid/ipid_training_program or contact Betsy Foxman, PhD, Director of IPID.

Graduate Student Instructor (GSI)

GSI’s assist in teaching courses, facilitating discussions in small sections connected to large lecture courses, running laboratory sections, and holding office hours where one-on-one teaching occurs. Additional responsibilities include grading and giving feedback on students’ written work .

The Department of Epidemiology has a limited number of GSI positions available in fall and winter term. Application information will be emailed via the student listserv. Both Ph.D. and M.P.H. students are eligible to apply for departmental GSI positions. GSI’s receive tuition coverage, health care and a stipend.
Many of our students secure GSI positions in departments outside of Epidemiology (i.e. Biology, Statistics). For more information, please visit Academic Human Resources site

Financial Aid

Many students fund their graduate education through federal financial aid. In order to be eligible to receive financial aid, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Please visit the U-M Financial Aid page for more information.
