Department of Epidemiology

Admissions Information

The Department of Epidemiology offers two different degrees: a Master's of Public Health (M.P.H.) and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). The M.P.H. degree is administered through the School of Public Health while the Ph.D. is administered through the Rackham School of Graduate Studies. Application Procedure

Applicants must submit a complete online application, a non-refundable application fee, official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended, three letters of recommendation, a personal statement, a statement of purpose and GRE or MCAT scores.  Applicants whose first language is not English must also submit TOEFL or MELAB scores (English Requirements). Minimum Requirements for Applying

  • All applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Applicants for the Doctoral Program (Ph.D.) must have a relevant Master's Degree (i.e. Master's of Public Health, or M.S. in Biostatistics or other Public Health field) prior to being considered for admission.
  • All applicants are required to submit GRE or MCAT scores. The score must be from within the last 5 years.
  • Applicants whose native language is not English will need to present evidence of competency in English (TOEFL or MELAB scores). However, if a non-native English speaker has been granted a degree in an English speaking institution, the TOEFL or MELAB test is not required. Please refer to the Admissions page for International Applicants for details on English proficiency requirements as well as other requirements specific to international students.

Note for all applicants: The department works on a rolling admissions process and reviews and makes admission decisions prior to the application deadline.  It is recommended that you try to submit a complete application in advance of the deadline.

M.P.H. Admission Information

Application Deadlines for Fall 2010

  • Deadline: January 15th, 2010
  • Although our hard deadline is January 15th, 2010, it is best to submit your application in advance of the deadline. Applications are reviewed beginning in December on a rolling basis.

In addition to completing the application, applicants must submit the following to SOPHAS (you do not need to submit these documents to the University of Michigan). Please note that MCAT and TOEFL scores must be submitted via SOPHAS, GRE scores must be sumbitted directly to University of Michigan. For the Dental Public Health Program ONLY you can submit DAT or GRE scores.

  • Statement of Purpose - a concise, well-written essay about your career goals and how the graduate program will help you meet your career and education objectives
  • Personal Statement - a brief description about your background (In SOPHAS, under Applications<School Designations, click on "Additional Questions" and scroll down to "Optional Personal Statement")
  • Official Transcripts documenting all undergraduate and graduate work (official transripts should be sent to SOPHAs)
  • Three Letters of Recommendation - academic and professional recommendations are desired; personal recommendations are not accepted

Ph.D. Admission Information

Application Deadlines for Fall 2010

  • Priority Deadline: December 1, 2009
  • Secondary Deadline: January 15, 2010

All Rackham applications and supplemental materials should be submitted in accordance with the directions on the Rackham application at http://www.rackham.umich.edu/admissions/apply_now/. Please click on the green box labeled 'Go to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Rackham Application'.

In addition to completing the application, applicants must submit the following:

  • Statement of Purpose - a concise, well-written essay about your career goals and how the graduate program will help you meet your career and education objectives
  • Personal Statement - a brief description about your background
  • Official Transcripts documenting all undergraduate and graduate work (Official transcripts must be sent to Rackham and to the Epidemiology Department)
  • Three Letters of Recommendation* - academic and professional recommendations are desired; personal recommendations are not accepted
  • GRE and/or MCAT scores taken within the last five (5) years

* If you submit your letters electronically through Rackham, you do not need to send the hardcopy letters to the Epidemiology Department. If you send hardcopy letters you only need to send them to the Department of Epidemiology:
