Winter 2008

Wade Hampton Frost Award

Dr. Ana Diez-RouxDr. Ana V. Diez-Roux, professor of epidemiology, director for the Center for Integrative Approaches to Health Disparities and associate director for the Center for Social Epidemiology and Population Health, was honored with the Wade Hampton Frost Award and delivered the Wade Hampton Frost Lecture at the American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting on October 27th in San Diego, CA. The Wade Hampton Frost Lecture Award recognizes a person who has made a significant contribution to addressing a public health issue of major importance by applying epidemiologic methods. Dr. Diez Roux's reserach focuses on social inequalities in health with a special focus on the intergration of population-level and individual-level factors.

UCLA Alumni Hall of Fame

Dr. Betsy FoxmanDr. Betsy Foxman, professor of epidemiology, was honored on March 25 in Beverly Hills. Dr. Foxman was inducted into the UCLA School of Public Health Alumni Hall of Fame, which "celebrates the accomplishments of outstanding alumni who make substantial and distinctive contributions to the field of public health."  She received her MSPH degree in 1980 and her Ph.D. degree in 1983 from the Department of Epidemiology at UCLA.

Outstanding Alumni Award

Dr. MaryFran SowersDr. MaryFran Sowers, professor of epidemiology and John G. Searle Professor of Public Health, has received a 2006 Outstanding Alumni Award from the University of Iowa College of Public Health.  This award honors exceptional graduates who have made significant contributions in their field throughout their careers and who have demonstrated a commitment to the College's mission, vision, and goals. MaryFran was cited in the University's news release for her expertise and international reputation in the fields of bone health and biomarkers and for her work with the National Arthritis Foundation and the Federal Trade Commission.

Harold R. Johnson Diversity Service Award

Epidemiology Professor Dr. Sioban Harlow is a recipient of this year's Harold R. Johnson Diversity Service Award.  This is a major University award, established in 1996 in honor of the former Dean of the School of Social Work, Harold R. Johnson, that recognizes UM faculty who have exhibited outstanding leadership in the area of cultural diversity.

John P. McGovern Award

Dr. George Kaplan Dr. George Kaplan, professor of epidemiology and director of the Center for Social Epidemiology and Population Health (CSEPH) and the Health and Society Scholars Program has been selected by UT Houston SPH as the recipient of the John P. McGovern Award. "The John P. McGovern Award Lecture Series in Health Promotion was established in 1996 by Dr. McGovern to acknowledge the important role that health promotion programs play in public health to improve health and prevent disease. Dr. McGovern has had a long-standing involvement in programs that help individuals and communities to prevent lifestyle-related illnesses and cope with chronic disease and disabilities. His generous gift to The Centers for Health Promotion and Prevention Research provides an opportunity to recognize distinguished researchers who have made outstanding contributions to the development, implementation and evaluation of health promotion programs."

Outstanding Paper of the Year

Dr. George KaplanEach year, the editors of the journal, Epidemiology, select one article as "outstanding paper of the year."  This year's selection is an article authored by Dr. James Koopman, Carl Simon and Chris Riolo:  "When to control endemic infections by focusing on high-risk groups," which was published in Sept 2005.

 

 

Fall 2005

Wade Hampton Frost Award

Dr. Betsy FoxmanDr. Betsy Foxman, professor of epidemiology and director of the Center for Molecular and Clinical Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases, has been named the 2005 winner of the Wade Hampton Frost Lectureship Award from the Epidemiology Section of the American Public Health Association. The award recognizes a person who has made "a significant contribution to addressing a public health issue of major importance by applying epidemiologic principles and methods." The award was presented at the American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting in New Orleans on November 7th at 4:30 PM. Professor Foxman also delivered the Wade Hampton Frost lecture.

F. Marian Bishop Outstanding Educator of the Year Award

Dr. Matthew BoultonThe Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine has announced that its 2005 F. Marian Bishop Outstanding Educator of the Year award will go to Dr. Matthew Boulton of UM SPH. Boulton is the school's associate dean for practice, an associate professor of Epidemiology, and director of the Preventive Medicine Residency; he is also director of the University of Michigan Bioterrorism Preparedness Initiative. This award is given for outstanding contributions to teaching and education in preventive medicine and public health.

 

Summer 2004

Dr. Betsy FoxmanDr. Betsy Foxman, UM SPH professor of Epidemiology and director of the Center for Molecular and Clinical Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases, has been elected president of the American College of Epidemiology (ACE) for 2005-2006. She is the first University of Michigan faculty member elected to lead this group. Founded in 1979, ACE serves the interests of its members through sponsorship of scientific meetings, publications and educational activities, recognizing outstanding contributions to the field and advocating for issues pertinent to epidemiology.

Spring 2004 

Dr. Arnold Monto, UM SPH professor of epidemiology, in March began a 2004-2005 term as president of the American Epidemiological Society. He is the second faculty member from the University of Michigan to be elected to lead this 75-year-old group. The first was Thomas Francis Jr., a professor and chair of the SPH Department of Epidemiology who conducted the field trials that in 1955 proved the polio vaccine safe and effective.
