The University of Michigan School of Public Health offers innovative programs to keep working professionals up-to-date on the latest developments in their field, while at the same time continuing to expand and further their professional interests. The Office of Public Health Practice, a new initiative launched in 2005, brings greater visibility and emphasis to the school’s focus on building the practice of public health.

The executive and continuing education programs vary in length, discipline, and degree-granting status. Some explore emerging issues, while others address ongoing training needs. But from single-day symposia to multi-year medical residencies and other degree programs, they are united in a common goal: to broaden the skills and further the work of public health professionals.

On Job/On Campus Graduate Degree Programs

On Job/On Campus (OJ/OC) programs allow working professionals to continue their careers while participating in an eighteen month to two-year course of weekend study (depending upon program) that culminates in a degree from UM SPH. OJ/OC students attend classes in Ann Arbor for intensive, four-day weekends--monthly currently, but the increasing incorporation of distance learning is slated to reduce on campus weekend sessions in some programs. OJ/OC students have the same instructors, course offerings, and course requirements (exams, reports, etc.) as residential students. The difference is the custom fit for working professionals. Preventive Medicine Residency

This graduate medical education program trains physicians to apply their knowledge to improve the health of the population as a whole. The first year is spent pursuing a master of public health in general epidemiology. Second year practicum rotations include state and local public health agencies and health systems, for training in disease surveillance and outbreak investigation, clinical preventive medicine and health care quality issues, and community-based health assessment skills, with opportunity for specialization. The program leads to board eligibility in preventive medicine from the American Board of Preventive Medicine. More info.

Certificate in the Foundations of Public Health

The Certificate in the Foundations of Public Health is an interdepartmental program that offers coursework in each of the five major disciplines of public health for students wishing to earn graduate credit. Courses are taught by University of Michigan School of Public Health faculty using distance learning. Certificate coursework may be transferable to a degree program within UM SPH or to other schools or programs of public health. More info.
