Professional Summary
Dean Smith is a Professor in the Department of Health Management and Policy and Senior Associate Dean for Administration at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. He also serves as the Director of the University of Michigan Center for Value-Based Insurance Design (V-BID). He is committed to a line of teaching and research that helps to provide a better understanding of the financial aspects of working with and working in health care delivery and financing organizations.
Prior to joining the faculty in 1985, Professor Smith was with a management consulting firm where he was responsible for health care clients. On sabbaticals from the University he worked at Lincoln National Life Insurance Company on the evaluation of managed care operations, at Parke-Davis Pharmaceutical Research on the implementation of economic analyses in clinical trials and at Massey University in Auckland, New Zealand on financial management. He is a founding Board member of Molina Healthcare of Michigan (a Medicaid-focused HMO), having previously served as President/CEO of Good Health Michigan.
