Research Interest & Projects

Dr. Haan's primary research interests are in the epidemiology of aging populations. This involves study of the etiology and natural history of chronic diseases and functional impairment in old age. In addition, she is interested in methodological issues in understanding gerontological epidemiology. Her work has encompassed disease prevention in old age, the etiology of neurodegenerative diseases and the influence of cardiovascular disease on dementia. Her central focus is on gender and ethnicity as cofactors in explaining the heterogeneity of disease and functioning in aging. She is involved in clinical research in women's health, especially on the influence of hormones on the aging process, gene-environment interactions between estrogen and Apolipoprotein E, and the role of estrogen in preventing cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive decline. Dr. Haan is the PI of a multi-center randomized clinical trial of hormone replacement therapy as a preventive treatment for macular degeneration that includes 20 universities and is a component of the Women's Health Initiative. She has served in a leadership role in this study for seven years. Within WHI, she is also focused on the effects of HRT on cognitive impairment and dementia. Dr. Haan is conducting research into the associations between diabetes, dementia and cognitive impairment as part of the Sacramento Area Latino Study on Aging (SALSA). This research concerns the influence of cultural social, psychological, dietary, genetic and biological risk factors on the development of these conditions in older Latinos. She is PI of an imaging substudy within SALSA that is examining differences in various brain structures in normal, cognitively impaired and demented adults. The implications of these research findings for health care services delivery and policy are also of interest.
