Research Interest & Projects

Molecular Epidemiology of Colorectal Cancer: The broad objective of this study is to examine how environmental factors may modify genetic risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). The major goals of this study are to measure the risks of developing cancer associated with the APC I1307K allele and identify and measure potential effect modification of genetic and environmental risks in the pathogenesis of CRC.

The Genes, Environment and Melanoma Study: This multidisciplinary, international collaborative study of genetic and environmental contributions to multiple primary melanoma will measure the relative risk for mutations and polymorphisms of cell cycle genes, pigmentary genes, and nucleotide excision repair genes. These will be examined in relation to solar exposure. Dr. Gruber is the PI of the University of Michigan site.

Molecular Markers, Health Behaviors, and Comorbidities as Predictors of Tumor Recurrence, Survival and Quality of Life in Head and Neck Cancer Patients NIH Head and Neck SPORE: This population based study of patients with head and neck cancer is designed to identify prognostic factors and modifiable predictors of tumor recurrence, survival and quality of life.

Susceptibility Prediction in Colorectal Cancer: This collaborative clinical study of familial colon cancer will measure penetrance of colon cancer genes and build statistical models for clinical prediction.
