Self-Study Guide Budget

A. Budget considerations:
Budget categories that a Curriculum Committee will want to consider when estimating the costs associated with their curriculum design may include:

  1. PERSONNEL: Depending on the curriculum design selected, support for the following responsibilities within the program should be considered by the Curriculum Committee: program director, teaching faculty, student services assistant, and webmaster.
  2. LIBRARY RESOURCES: Review existing library resources and determine whether dedicated space is available to house a more expanded genetics collection. Your findings will guide decisions about acquiring additional books, journals, and audiovisual aids.
  3. RECRUITMENT MATERIALS: The design, printing, distribution and updating of recruitment brochures should be considered.
  4. ANNUAL SEMINAR SPEAKER COSTS: One effective mechanism for initiating and promoting a new curriculum is to provide an annual campus-wide seminar which attracts interested students and faculty.
  5. TRAINING GRANT: If a decision is made to offer a degree in public health genetics, student support and even a training grant need to be considered in the program budget.

B. Facilities:
Determine if dedicated office or student space may be needed for the program under consideration.

C. Revenue Generation:
The Curriculum Committee may wish to consider the following activities as potential sources of revenue to support the new curriculum: teaching on the web; teleconferencing (with or without interaction); distance learning/teaching collaboration with other universities, institutes or organizations; providing continuing education credit for health professionals and distribution of a series of course(s) lecture videos.
