Neonatal Biobank

CPHCG is partnering with the Bureau of Laboratories and the Genetics/Newborn Screening Unit of the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) and the Life, Sciences, and Society Program to develop a community engagement plan to support the development of the Michigan Neonatal Biobank. CPHCG has been involved in a systematic evaluation of the newborn dried blood spot statutes and the educational materials given to parents in each of the fifty states. This evaluation aims to identify any language in either the statutes or educational materials that refer to the storage or use of dried blood spots. As an additional part of this review of dried blood spot storage and use, center staff members are also compiling both international and national policies that deal with these issues. These include policies or position statements issued by professional organizations, foreign countries, consumer advocacy organizations, and other stakeholder groups. Finally, the last piece of this review of dried blood spots is a literature review of the storage and use of newborn dried blood spots. Also included in this literature review are articles pertaining to the associated ethical, legal, social, and political issues of dried blood spots and the connection between newborn dried blood spots and more traditional Biobanks.
