Public Health Grand Rounds on Genomics

The Center for Public Health and Community Genomics, in partnership with the Michigan Public Health Training Center and the Office of Public Health Practice at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, plans to hold a 2-hour public health grand rounds on genomics in the Spring of 2008. The purpose of the grand rounds will be to further an understanding of current genomics among public health practitioners and other organizations that play a role in developing and implementing public health programs. The grand rounds will be face-to-face, webcast, and archived for future viewing on the SPH site. Planning for the grand rounds is currently underway and further planning will occupy this website in the near future.

Genomics Forum of the American Public Health Association (APHA)

The Genomics Forum has been approved as an official component of APHA. The Forum meets monthly and, since May 2007, assembled the application and materials for its approval, elected core leadership (a chair, co-chair, and secretary), convened a special Leadership Team to draft a set of goals and organizational structure for the Forum, and organized and held its first business meeting at APHA. The Forum currently has 233 members. These individuals represent a diverse set of organizations across the spectrum of public health agencies working in each of the six sectors of public health identified in the Institute of Medicine Report, The Future of the Public Health in the 21st Century: academia (46%), government (27%), community (11%), healthcare (7%), business (3%), the media (<1%), and others (5%). Members represent 34 U.S. states and 6 countries worldwide.

At last year’s APHA meeting in Washington D.C., the Forum held its first business meeting, hosted a breakfast, and co-sponsored a Roundtable with APHA’s Community Based Public Health Caucus and hosted by the National Human Genome Research Institute Community Involvement Branch; approximately 40 people attended the first event, 20 the second, and 40 the third. At the business meeting the Forum sponsored a presentation on the issue of workforce competency by Andrew Faucett, Director of the Genomics and Public Health Program at Emory University School of Medicine. In becoming an official component of APHA, the Forum will be given the opportunity to sponsor and co-sponsor scientific sessions at the 2008 meeting creating a greater presence of genomics within APHA.

Navigating Genomics: Practice and Academe in the Great Lakes and Beyond

In the Spring of 2008, CPHCG, MDCH, the Minnesota Department of Health, and the University of Minnesota School of Public Health will jointly convene Navigating Genomics: Practice and Academe in the Great Lakes and Beyond. The focus of the conference will be on utilizing an academic/practice partnership model to further the integration of genomics and public health across the region. This conference will bring together representatives from academia and public health in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The other two CDC-funded states (Oregon and Utah) and the University of Washington Center for Genomics and Public Health will also be invited to participate at the conference. Time will be spent on developing collaborative academic-practice partnerships and on sharing a sense of what can be gained through partnering. There will also be a process to identify further opportunities.
