We have another new Assistant Professor since our last newsletter. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Mark Padilla, a Medical Anthropologist (Ph.D., MPH, Emory University) who come to us from Columbia University. He joined us this Fall and will teach courses in global health and qualitative methods. Mark's research focuses on global health in general and HIV/AIDS prevention in the context of tourism in the Caribbean Basin, in particular. Two of our faculty, Drs. Neal Krause and Nancy Janz, are on sabbatical this year. One project Neal is working on during his sabbatical is a book that he has been thinking about for a long time on religion, health, and aging. Nancy is continuing her work on quality of life and chronic disease, but she also remains somewhat involved with curricular issues in the Department. Please also join me in wishing Neal and Nancy a restful and productive sabbatical leave. Regretfully, however, Caroline Wang has decided to leave HBHE. She moved to northern California where her husband has accepted a senior management position with a biotech company. We have already missed her thoughtful contributions, creative ideas, and constructive energy. I am delighted, however, to report that the first two phases of the new SPH building, the Crossroads Building and Tower, were officially opened October 26, 2007. The dedication commenced with a presentation on chronic disease and its management by our former Dean, and the Myron E. Wegman Distinguished University Professor of Public Health, Dr. Noreen Clark. This was followed by a dedication ceremony that included presentations from the University President, Mary Sue Coleman and Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Teresa A. Sullivan. We also heard from J. Ricardo Guzman, Executive Director, Community Health and Social Services Center (CHASS), a community partner in the Urban Research Center. It was quite an exciting event that illustrated both the high profile the School enjoys at the University, and the linkages we have with community partners. The third phase of the building project involves renovation of SPH I. Our Department will be moving to the newly renovated space which we expect to be completed in late 2007 or early 2008. All the Best,Dr. Marc Zimmerman |
