She also received a certificate in editing from University of Washington Extension, in 2005, and this job is a perfect marriage of health education and editing. When not working, she spends time with friends playing music, tending to my house and garden, and hanging out with Greg, a professional jazz guitarist and bass player. She'd love to hear from my old HBHE mates.

Ileana Sasano

Michelle Segar (’97)
Michelle Segar's focus on understanding how to facilitate sustained physical activity participation and self-care behaviors among midlife women hasn't wavered since receiving her MS in Kinesiology in 1995 and her MPH in 1997. Since that time, she received her PhD in Motivational Psychology in 2006. Her doctoral researched identified which exercise goals help or undermine women's long-term exercise motivation, behavioral self-regulation and participation. Her interdisciplinary approach to solving this important problem has generated national accolades and media attention. This year, her dissertation was awarded "Distinguished Student Outstanding Dissertation Award" by the Society of Behavioral Medicine and her published research was recognized by the North American Menopause Society. More Magazine featured Michelle and her NIH-funded and women-specific exercise, self-care, and weight control coaching business(www.essentialsteps.net) in their November 2008 issue. She consults with heath care organizations and trains clinicians about "best practices" for prescribing exercise to their female midlife patients. But the most exciting thing to happen this year for Michelle was her and her husband's (Jeff Horowitz, Kinesiology Professor, UM) adoption of their son Eli Segar Horowitz!
