Marc Zimmerman,
HBHE Chair
Dear HBHE alumni, students, and staff,
Happy holidays. I am excited to bring you another issue of HBHE’s alumni newsletter because I have some wonderful news to share.
First, it was great to see so many people at the HBHE Staying Connected Reception at APHA in Denver this year. It was our all time high (maybe it was the Denver altitude) in attendance with over 80 alumni, students, and staff joining in the festivities. It’s always fun to re-connect with old friends. We look forward to these receptions and appreciate the opportunity to keep in touch with so many of you. If you weren’t able to make it this year, we hope you will be able to join us next year in Washington, D.C. It is a fun event.
Second, this fall when Emily Renda, our new alumni coordinator and newsletter editor, sent a query for news from everyone we were delighted to hear from Cecilia Doak. Cecilia graduated in the class of 1944! You can read about Cecilia and her many contributions in the Health Literacy field in the this edition of the Link. You can also read about Holly and Russ Derry, two alums who met during the program and are now married and raising a family here in Ann Arbor.
Third, I am delighted to announce a successful end to our search for a faculty member in Global Health. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Roberto DeVogli our newest faculty member. He comes to us from the International Institute for Society and Health at the University College of London where he studied psychosocial factors and socioeconomic inequalities in health, and the health effects of globalization and economic inequality in developed and developing countries. Roberto received his MPH (1998) and Ph.D. (2003) from the UCLA School of Public Health Department of Community Health Sciences. Roberto helps us expand our research and teaching in Global Public Health.
Finally, many congratulations are in order for HBHE faculty, staff and students. Congratulations to Cleo Caldwell on her new role as the Director of the Center for Research on Ethnicity, Culture and Health (CRECH). Dr. Caldwell is taking over as director from Dr. Woody Neighbors. You can read more about CRECH, Dr. Caldwell, and her work in the Faculty Spotlight. I would also like to congratulate two staff members, Emily Pingel and Alison Grodzinski, who both gave birth to sons in the last few months.
Wishing you all a happy and healthy holiday season!
