SPOTLIGHT: New Alumni

As the members of our graduating class of 2009 begin their new careers, I would like to welcome them to our HBHE alumni family.

Our new graduates are working in a variety of public health settings including schools, hospitals, local and state health departments, and community organizations, and research. Some are returning to academia to pursue their doctorate degrees. Although many graduates have stayed in the US, we also have graduates working all around the world.

A few of our new alum wrote to let us know where they are living and what they are doing now.

Kelli FurmaN
Kelli writes: "I am living and working in Gillette, WY, which is in the northeast corner of the state. I work at the City of Gillette Police Department as a project coordinator on a grant focused on reducing the misuse of alcohol, specifically the prevention of alcohol use among youth and the reduction of binge drinking and impaired driving. I coordinate the community coalition that advises the grant's strategies for reaching the goals of alcohol misuse prevention.  We mainly focus on environmental strategies and local policy change with supplemental activities of community awareness and education. The prevention grant is part of a state-wide network of efforts. So its great to work with professionals and communities across the state.

I'm planning to make Wyoming my home for the foreseeable future. I live here with my fiance in our new home just outside the city. "

Areeta Bridgemohan
Areeta returned home to Ontario Canada. She is living and working in Oakville, Ontario, just outside of Toronto. She is the Manager of Granting and Community Relations, United Way of Oakville. She writes: "In this position I will be largely responsible for managing the granting and allocations process at the United Way of Oakville.  The United Way of Oakville works in close collaboration with the other United Ways of the Halton Region, where Oakville is located.  I will also help with maintaining those relationships and coordinating the granting process for programs that are jointly funded.  In addition, there are other projects with the community at large that I may be involved with over the year, such as liaising between donor companies and recipient community organizations, or participating as a reviewer for other local foundations. "

YUSUF ransome
Yusuf writes: "Currently, I am in New York City and working during the summer with two of my program advisors at Columbia University. One project includes finalizing a manuscript (from last summer's HBHE field placement), which I hope to submit to a peer reviewed journal by end of the summer. In September, I matriculate into the DrPH program at Columbia University Joseph L. Mailman School of Public Health,Department of Sociomedical Sciences. I plan to focus my research on the sexual health of Caribbean immigrants in New York City and the USA. "

Danielle Robling
Danielle writes: "Upon graduation, I resumed work at my internship site, Altarum Institute, with projects on childhood obesity surveillance and health information technology. This fall, I will be starting classes all over again in HBHE as a doctoral student. On the personal side, I've been happily house hunting and planning my fast-approaching fall wedding."

BEST OF LUCK TO ALL OF OUR NEW HBHE ALUMNI!
