HBHE Chair Dear HBHE Alumni, students, and staff, We hope you have all had a good summer! I have much to report in this newsletter. First, congratulations to our faculty and students for another successful year. Several HBHE faculty and staff continue to be recognized for research and teaching. Cleo Caldwell was selected to receive an Outstanding Research Mentorship award and Ken Resnicow was presented with the Excellence in Research Award. I also want to say kudos to Tom Reischl, Barbara Israel, Amy Shultz, Robert McGranaghan and doctoral student Lynna Chung, who received a $25 000 award from the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan for the Healthy Communities, Healthy Eating Learning Series. And finally congratulations to Mark Padilla, who received the John Money Award from the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality. We have also been very successful this year with grant funding and have begun many new projects and initiatives. Derek Griffith is leading the Men 4 Health project, which is a five-year community based participatory research project that is working with men and community based organizations in Southeast Michigan to learn about and improve the eating, physical activity, and overall health of African American men who are 35 and older. The Prevention Research Center of Michigan was refunded and will be embarking on a new core research project to explore the use of new media for STI preveniton in Genesee County. Arline Geronimous is also embarking on some very exciting work to study allostatic load and health. In addition, Alison Miller received funding to study of a new intervention for children of incarcerated mothers, and Edith Parker received funding for a new environmental health grant. Congratulations also to Woody Neighbors who received renewal funding for the CRECH Training Center. Finally, a special congratulations to Nancy Janz on becoming a grandmother.
Finally, I want to invite you all to our 5th Annual Staying Connected reception, which will be held November 9, 2009 at APHA in Philadelphia. Stay tuned for more details. We look forward to seeing you all there! |
