Health Communication

From one-on-one health counseling to broad-based social marketing campaigns, research has demonstrated that various aspects of health communications, including message format, receiver characteristics, and delivery channel, can affect the impact of our programs.

The Department of Health Behavior and Health Education addresses these dimensions through course work and research experiences, ranging from conceptualization to nuts-and-bolts development. Students work with department faculty to contribute to state of the art health communication research.

Located jointly within the School of Public Health and the University of Michigan's Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Center for Health Communications Research builds and evaluates cutting-edge interventions using the latest interactive communications technologies.

Students work with faculty to develop and evaluate interventions tailored to cultural values and attitudes. Our work in health communication spans other focal areas in the Department, other departments in the School of Public Health, and other UM schools, including Medicine, Information, Literature Science and the Arts, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Business.

Graduates who focus on health communication can pursue careers in health agencies, health maintenance organizations, large employers and insurers, pharmaceutical companies, media and marketing agencies, community-based organizations, eHealth companies, and more.
