Research MethodsThe purpose of this area of focus is to provide students with comprehensive, in-depth coverage of research methods in health behavior and health education. Courses offered in this area include both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Some focus more directly on the design and evaluation of interventions, while others involve research methods that are appropriate for basic research as well as practice. Also included in this area of focus are courses that will help the student master the more pragmatic aspects of research in health behavior and health education, including grant proposal writing and budgeting practices for public health intervention projects. Progress in the field of health behavior and health education relies on the ability to test and evaluate the theories and interventions we devise. Courses in this area are designed to help students acquire the basic skills to meet this challenge, and to better prepare them for jobs that require these skills, such as projects for national, state, and local health organizations. Having sound methodological skills also prepares students for positions with research projects within universities. Additionally, this area of focus will help prepare students who wish to pursue doctoral training. |
