Manuscripts should be submitted through the Web-based tracking system http://heb.edmgr.com. The site contains detailed instructions on how to submit the manuscript and track the progression of the review process. All manuscripts will be assigned a manuscript number and will receive an email confirmation acknowledging receipt of your submission. Authors are asked not to send hard copies of their manuscripts to the journal office. Inquiries in regards to the journal should be directed to tvogel@umich.edu.

The manuscript including captions, footnotes, tables, and references, must be typed double-spaced with 1 inch margins in a 12 point font and are typically no longer than 20-30 pages in length. Footnotes to the text should be avoided where possible and no appendices included. All manuscripts should be submitted in English. An abstract of 100-150 words must accompany each submission followed by 3 or more keywords.

Health Education & Behavior is interested in articles directed toward researchers and/or practitioners in health behavior and health education. Empirical research, case studies, program evaluation, literature reviews, and articles discussing theories are regularly published in the journal. Each manuscript submitted is expected to include a section discussing implications for practitioners in the reported work. If a study assesses an intervention, a description of the intervention should be included in the paper.

Authors are asked not to use the term "subjects" when referring to research participants. Alternative terms such as respondents, research participants, or some other more specific designation (e.g., youths, females, residents) should be used.

All literature references should be done in American Psychological Association style (APA) with reference list organized in alphabetical order by author. Please see APA style manual for specific instructions. References to unpublished material are discouraged.

All tables should be cited sequentially in text, numbered, and supplied with explanatory captions. Table columns should have explanatory headings. Tables can be included at the end of your document or uploaded as separate documents in the submission process. Tables and figures should never be typed within the body of the manuscript. All figures must be cited in the text, numbered, and supplied with a caption.

Proofs will be supplied to authors to check the accuracy of typesetting and copyediting. Authors may be charged for excessive alterations to the proofs.

A reprint order form will be sent to the author after the issue containing his or her work is published, along with tearsheets of the article. Two complimentary copies of the entire issue will be sent to single authors; for articles with more than one author, each author will receive one copy.

Since a new U.S. copyright law became effective in January 1978, the transfer of copyright from author to publisher, heretofore implicit in the submission of a manuscript, must now be explicitly transferred to enable the publisher to assure maximum dissemination of the author's work. A copy of the agreement executed and signed by each author is required with each manuscript submission. The agreement can be found on the website. (If the article is a "work for hire," the agreement must be signed by the employer.) No manuscript can be considered accepted unless a signed copyright transfer agreement exists. It is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission and defray all fees for the use of any quotes over 300 words from previously published academic material; non-original photographs, figures, or tables or any portion thereof, exclusive of data; quotes of any length from newspapers, magazines, poems, songs, and anything broadcast over radio or television. Without a copy of written permission on file with the publisher, the quote cannot be used. Original photographs require signed releases from those photographed.
