Health Behavior and Health Education

M.P.H. Curriculum

The Department of Health Behavior and Health Education offers a multidisciplinary and integrated curriculum for the M.P.H. degree. All students working towards the M.P.H. will complete courses designed to provide a deep understanding of the issues, skills and competencies necessary for leaders in the field. M.P.H. students must also complete coursework related to each discipline in public health to fulfill the Breadth, Integration, and Capstone requirements. The required courses for the M.P.H. degree are listed below:

Total credits required: 60 credit hours

Note: Students are required to take at least half of their credit hours within the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education. The credit reduction received for field experience may not count towards this requirement.

It is recommend that students enroll in the following required courses during their first year of study in the sequence listed below:

  • BIOSTAT 503 (Fall Term)
  • HBEHED 600 (Fall Term)
  • HBEHED 699 (Fall Term)
  • EPID 503 (Winter Term)
  • HBEHED 651 (Winter Term)
  • HBEHED 699 (Winter Term)

Students must complete both HBEHED 600 and 651 prior to starting their field experience.

The Health Behavior and Health Education M.P.H. program allows students the flexibility to take an array of graduate-level courses. Students may choose to take elective courses which are aligned with their career interests or to complete a certificate program.

*M.P.H. students may choose to complete an Area of Specialization by taking 4 or more courses in a specific topic area.
