HEP Project Area:
Eastside Detroit

The HEP eastside area is comprised of 19 US Census tracts. Some of the neighborhoods located in this area include Conner Creek, English Village, Indian Village and West Village. According to the 2000 US Census, 76% of the housing stock in this area was built prior to 1950. The median household income was $20,811.00 in 2000 and 15% of the residents were age 65 or older. Racially, Blacks represent 97% and Whites represent 2% of the population. Between 1990 and 2000 the overall population in the east HEP area declined by 31%. Detroit Health Department data for 2000 indicate the age adjusted heart disease death rate for the Community Reinvestment Strategy cluster 3*, which includes the HEP east area, is 595.9 per 100,000 population compared with 257.6*** for the US and 418.4** for the entire city of Detroit.
