HEP Project Area:
Southwest Detroit

The HEP southwest area is comprised of 12 US Census tracts and includes parts of the Briggs, Corktown, Hubbard-Richard, Millennium Village, Southwest Detroit and Westside Industrial neighborhoods. According to the 2000 US Census, 75% of the housing stock in this area was built prior to 1950. The median household income was $24,956.00 in 2000 and 8% of the residents were age 65 or older. Racially and ethnically, Hispanics comprise 60% , non-Hispanic Whites represent 21% and non-Hispanic Blacks represent 16% of the population in this study area. Between 1990 and 2000 the overall population in the southwest HEP area declined by 16%. Detroit Health Department data indicate that in 2000 the age adjusted heart disease death rate for the Community Reinvestment Strategy cluster 5, which includes most of the HEP southwest area, was 462.4 per 100,000 population compared with 257.6*** for the US and 418.4 for the entire city of Detroit.
