Surveys

A Survey Subcommittee made up of Steering Committee members from community organizations, health service providing institutions and academic institutions designed, pretested and revised a community survey instrument to assess aspects of the social environment (e.g., perceived stressors), socioeconomic status (e.g., income, occupation, wealth), health related behaviors (e.g., smoking), indoor air exposures (e.g., self-reported occupational exposures), health status indicators (e.g., physical functioning, blood pressure), and dietary intake (e.g., food frequency).

Survey implementation began in April of 2002 and continued through April 2003. Surveys were administered in three areas of the city : southwest, eastside and northwest Detroit.

Preliminary survey results are provided below:

HEP Survey Respondents by Area

Each survey respondent was mailed a Nutrition Feedback Form developed using their responses to the nutrition questions included in the survey. The tailored feedback form, created using a HEP customized nutrition analysis, included information about dietary protective and risk factors related to cardiovascular disease (CVD), and suggested foods that could increase the individual's protective factors or reduce their risk factors for CVD.

At the completion of each survey, community participants were invited to participate in a biomarker component of the study, following a protocol designed by the Biomarker Subcommittee. A total of 367 survey participants participated in the biomarker component of the study which involved collection of salivary cortisol over a two day period, and a blood draw. Each participant in the biomarker component of the study was mailed a feedback form based on analysis of their blood samples. The feedback form included information about risk and protective factors related to cardiovascular disease (CVD), as well as information about actions they could take to reduce the risk of CVD.
