The Detroit
Community-Academic Urban Research Center (URC) was established
in 1995 as part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) 'Urban Research Centers Initiative.' The Detroit URC develops,
implements, and evaluates interdisciplinary, collaborative, community-based
participatory research and intervention projects that aim to improve
the health of communities in the southwest and east sides of Detroit.
The Detroit URC involves collaboration among the University of
Michigan Schools of Public Health, Nursing and Social Work, Detroit
Health Department, Henry Ford Health System, and nine community-based
organizations in Detroit:
