HMP Alumni Board Proposed New Mission and Structure

Current Board Structure
The Health Management and Policy (HMP) Alumni Board was established in the 1970's as an advisory group comprised of elected class representatives for each graduating class.  The current structure allows for two class representatives for each graduating class.  Board membership, in theory, could include approximately 100 people if all classes and degree programs had representation.

Rationale for Restructuring
It is proposed that the HMP alumni board move from as structure that is based on class representatives to one of a smaller size whose members are recruited by the Department and alumni for their specific expertise, background or geographic location.  A main reason to consider a change in structure is that the current full board is large and unwieldy.  Because of department mergers and expansions in the degrees offered since the current Board structured was created, there are now several more degree programs and classes to represent.  In addition, both Board members and HMP faculty have expressed dissatisfaction with current levels of activity, engagement and actual representation of the alumni that tend to participate in Board meetings and activities.  A restructuring of the Board and its mission/activities would allow the Department to better utilize and take advantage of the great resources embodied in HMP alumni, and would enable alumni to play more active and meaningful roles in supporting the HMP department.
