HMP Alumni Board

Proposed HMP Alumni Board Mission

The overall mission of the HMP Alumni Board is to enhance alumni connections with and advice to the Department of Health Management and Policy.  More specifically, the mission includes:

  • To organize efforts to recruit a continual flow of outstanding student candidates for HMP degrees.
  • To assist current students and alumni with their professional career development through recruiting efforts, by promoting students/alumni to employers, and by creating networking and mentoring opportunities.
  • To provide an avenue through which Board members can provide information, feedback and advice to the Department regarding the external environment in the field, HMP curricula and degree programs, student support services, and other departmental programs and initiatives.
  • To further develop and support networking and fellowship among faculty, alumni, students and friends of HMP.
  • To collaborate with University officials in efforts to garner financial support from public and private sources to meet the financial needs of HMP and the School of Public Health.

The HMP Alumni Board represents the alumni community of HMP and its predecessor departments.  Its semi-annual meetings provide a forum for an exchange of information and ideas between the Board and the Department.  The Board is comprised of a diverse group of graduates who provide feedback on current curricular issues and input on market changes so that HMP can adapt quickly and maintain its leadership position in the field.  In addition, the Board strives to strengthen the HMP alumni network and to enhance communication among faculty, alumni, students and friends of the department.

Proposed New HMP Alumni Board Structure

Members of the HMP Alumni Board represent a diverse cross-section of the total alumni population, which numbers over 3,000 in 2007.  Board membership will consist of a group of approximately 30 alumni, with one member serving as Chair.  The goal is to have a Board with broad representation in terms of geography, career stages and types of health-related organizations and positions held by the members.  The HMP Alumni Board also will include the HMP Department Chair, who shall be an ex-officio member without vote.  Members will serve a two-year term, with the possibility of being invited to renew for a second and even a third term, with a term limit of 3 terms or 6 years of consecutive service.

Leadership on the HMP Alumni Board will come from the Board Chair, and the chairs of the 5 standing committees of the Board.  Two current HMP students will attend each Alumni Board meeting.  The students will be participants in the HMP Leadership Council, which is a group comprised of the current HMP student class representatives and the leaders from all departmental student groups and organizations.
