Alumni TestimonialsH-Net | Alumni Testimonials "My last 18+ months at Company X have been interesting. The economy has really hit the consulting industry hard. I just survived the 5th round of lay-offs in my group since I joined, and I had to wish two more fellow managers good-bye. Interestingly, they were both Wharton MBAs who had specialized in health care in business school. I have to admit, I'm still surprised that I've been spared while folks who feel they have 'superior' MBAs have been given a generous severance package. However, when I think about it, I'm not really surprised that we have let over half of the manager pool go, and almost all of them had their MBA from Wharton, Harvard, Berkeley and other prestigious programs. On the other hand, the three of us who arrived with MHSAs are still around and ranked in the top 1020% of our peers. To me, this shows that while you need strong business skills to be successful as a strategy consultant, strong industry knowledge is even more important. I have been told by numerous Company X partners that my knowledge of how the health care industry functions financially, organizationally and politically is deeper than any MBA hired at my level. If I have to hear another MBA ask the difference between Medicaid and Medicare, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, ASO and risk business or MLR and ALR, I am going to go crazy! Understanding these basic concepts is a priority in a MHSA program, whereas a MBA program tends to focus on more general business concepts, many of which do not apply to the health care industry. Classes such as health care law, politics (yes, knowing that CMS used to be HCFA is important), and health care organization and financing were critical in my understanding of how the health care industry functions. Even our classes that overlap with a traditional MBA program, such as finance, accounting, microeconomics, and operations research, all contained health care specific components that were important (e.g., DRG components in accounting, additional not-for-profit discussion in finance and risk analysis in economics)." Recent MHSA Alumnus I have been named the new Business Director for Pharmacy for Evanston Northwestern Healthcare. I'm extremely excited for this opportunity. The people here at ENH are great at recognizing and promoting talent. As you may know, I took the job of Manager for Patient Registration in the Emergency Department at Highland Park Hospital when I graduated. Since then, I have taken on managing Evanston hospital as well. I was granted a part-time supervisor to help me with the day-to-day duties at each hospital so I could focus on larger strategic projects for the ED. I split my time between the two hospitals and report to the Director of Emergency Services. I was given a lot of autonomy in helping improve processes (i.e. co-payment collections, registration accuracy, Press-Ganey scores, etc). I have truly enjoyed the job and have gained a lot of people management experience in the short 9 months I was in the position. I feel that I've added value to the ED and am very proud to be working for such a great institution. Joining such a great place would not be possible without help and guidance of an alumnus from HMP, and my excellent training at UM's School of Public Health. Michael Bechtel (MHSA 2003)
"Some of the best professional and personal relationships I have today are the result of my education at the University of Michigan School of
Public Health." "Rob and I just wanted to pass along how impressed we have been with Caraline's performance. If Caraline is the caliber of employee
we are able to recruit through the University hire program, the program should be viewed as a best practice." "An MPH degree provides an essential framework on health policy issues in the public sector. My education at the U of M continues to serve me
well in developing and analyzing federal and state health policy and in managing resources in the Federal Government." "Michigan's dedicated professors are extremely accessible and willing to facilitate students with the job search process. Support from
professors, classroom knowledge, and internship experience all contributed to my successfully obtaining a position as an Administrative Trainee
for the Mayo Clinic." "I must thank you and all the other professors for such a great educational
experience. I am extremely well prepared for my position and have confidence
when conversing with others who have far more 'real world' experience." "The reputation of the Michigan program and its staff speaks for itself. The value of my educational experience during the program and the professional
relationships I've developed being an active member of the alumni network serves as the foundation of a successful career." "My MPH has just begun to serve me. During the job search process,
the fact that I was from U of M was an instant foot in the door. I am
confident that the intellectual growth demanded of us by the wonderful
faculty and my experiences during the summer internship have prepared
me well for whatever career path lays ahead." I would like to commend you and the other faculty members for providing the solid base of knowledge needed to succeed at the management level. My degree has enabled me to not only succeed in the projects that have been assigned to me, but to also acquire leadership roles on standing committees. Thus far, my fellowship experience has been extremely rewarding. My preceptor and the senior management team has provided me with the freedom and resources needed to complete the tasks assigned, and my work is of importance to the organization. Highlights include: Managing the RFP Process for a patient tracking software package geared at reducing L.O.S., proposing and instituting a redesigned capital budget, evaluation tool, and most recently my preceptor has allowed me to take on the challenge of an organizational structure and delineating a plan that will facilitate the objectives of a multifaceted diversity effort. It was difficult deciding which graduate program to pursue after leaving
my undergraduate years, but I can say without reservation in retrospect
that
Michigan was the only correct choice. |
