Ph.D. Student Life

Students

HSOP studentsOur Ph.D. students bring new meaning to the term "melting pot" with students from across the United States and Canada as well as from countries around the world (including China, Guyana, Japan, Saudi Arabia and Taiwan). Students enter the HSOP program holding various college, professional, medical and graduate degrees, with primary concentration in economics, social sciences, medicine, business and healthcare administration.

Our students frequently collaborate with each other and with faculty members on research projects. Many of them also find enriching connections in other departments and schools at the University of Michigan. Please visit the current Ph.D. student profiles to learn more about the research interests of our doctoral students.

Ann Arbor and the Community

Ann Arbor is a fantastic place to live, work, and play, which is one of the many reasons students choose us! Aside from the exciting academic environment with the vast array of University resources and research opportunities, Ann Arbor itself is a charming community featuring delightful recreational activities, cultural events, restaurants, shopping, sporting events, concerts, parks and museums.  There are a wide variety of housing options to choose from, easy public transportation (free for students), and is one of the most bicycle friendly cities in the country! And for the student with a family to consider, Ann Arbor is also home to one of the best school districts in Michigan.  Learn more about Ann Arbor by visiting these sites and find out why living here is the best place to be!
