Research Interest & Projects

NIH

Perimenopause, Bone and Arthritis in African Americans (also known as SWAN-Michigan)
The major goals of project are to characterize the impact of menopause among Caucasian and African American women in relation to heart disease, glucose metabolism, bone status, arthritis and blood pressure.

Lead Mobilization and Bone Turnover in Pregnancy/Lactation
The major goals of this project is to describe the impact of bone turnover on lead mobilization and health outcomes in pregnancy/lactation. This is being implemented in Camden, NJ.

Biomarkers of Osteoarthritis: Their Epidemiology
The major goals of this project is to characterize six biomarkers of OA in a population based study to describe the longitudinal initiation and progression of OA over an eight year period and relate that to changes in bone and cartilage markers.

Case Definitions in Osteoarthritis
The major goal of this project is to provide appropriate case definitions of OA based on information from longitudinally taken x-rays, questionnaires about pain, MRI, and BRFS.

Depo Provera and Bone Density in Premenopausal Women
The major goals of this project are to describe the longitudinal change in bone mineral density with the administration of depo provera as a contraceptive method.

Functional Limitations and the Menopause
The major goals of this project are to characterize measures of physical functioning in a well-characterized cohort of women transitioning the menopause.

SWAN Repository
The major goals of this project is to provide data, serum, urine, DNA Repository from the multi-center SWAN Study.

Hormones and Health
The goal is to characterize ovarian hormones and gonadotropins in the MBHS cohort.

Estrogen Metabolism and Health Outcomes
The goals are to examine hormone metabolites and receptors in relation to bone, oxidized cholesterol and age a menopause.
