The University of Michigan Department of Epidemiology Presents:

Department Seminar Series

David A. Savitz, Ph.D. Joining us from Brown University

speaking on

The Public's Love/Hate Relationship with Epidemiology: The Burden of Being Relevant

The public's interest and responsiveness to epidemiologic ??indings has many advantages for the discipline and for public health but also poses challenges to managing expectations. The ways in which epidemiology's home in the real world affects the discipline will be discussed, along with revisiting the relationship of epidemiology to public health policy and practice. A detailed case study from a National Research Council committee that was formed to address health effects of contaminated drinking water at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina illustrates the complexity that arises when epidemiology intersects with a range of interested parties. Thursday, September 20, 2012 12:00 PM SPH I, Room 3755

All interested persons are cordially invited.
