The World Health Organization has stated that an influenza pandemic is the "most feared security threat" facing the world today and in the event of an influenza pandemic vaccines and antiviral medications may either be unavailable or may not provide sufficient protection. Because of this, the national government is exploring potential non-pharmaceutical interventions that may be utilized for pandemic influenza mitigation, and UM is one of the sites chosen to conduct this important research. Participants in the M-FLU Study have had the opportunity to directly contribute to research that may ultimately help guide the development of national policies for pandemic preparedness. This means that through their conscientious efforts, participants in the study have been working to make the US and the world a safer, healthier place!
- For the first-year study results, read the Feb. 15, 2010 Journal of Infectious Diseases article (PDF), read the Oct. 27, 2008 University of Michigan news release, and listen to a podcast.
